The bird walk began with a short introduction to the global Campus Bird Count initiative and how students can contribute to citizen science through bird monitoring. The session introduced participants to basic birdwatching techniques such as observing field marks, behaviour, and calls, while also highlighting how university campuses can act as important green refuges for both resident and migratory birds.
As the walk progressed across the campus landscape, students discovered an impressive diversity of birdlife, recording 40 species during the session. Wetland edges and open areas revealed birds such as Little Cormorant, Purple Heron, Grey Heron, Wood Sandpiper, River Tern, and the striking Pied Kingfisher hovering above the water. Tree canopies and gardens hosted familiar campus birds like Red-vented Bulbul, Coppersmith Barbet, and Brown Shrike, while open fields added sightings of Rufous-tailed Lark and the intricately nesting Baya Weaver. A memorable highlight for many was spotting the charming Spotted Owlet, quietly perched and observing the morning activity. The walk offered students an engaging opportunity to explore the biodiversity of their own campus while contributing valuable observations to the global Campus Bird Count.
