The bird walk led by Ratnesh Gupta began with a brief introduction on birdwatching basics, where students were introduced to the importance of wetlands, ethical birdwatching practices, and simple identification techniques such as observing shape, behaviour, and calls. The session set the context for the walk, highlighting how the surrounding wetlands, fields, and scattered trees support a wide range of resident and migratory birds and why such habitats are crucial for conservation and learning.
As the walk unfolded, the wetlands quickly came alive with bird activity. Elegant Little Egrets and Indian Pond Herons stalked the shallows while Bronze-winged Jacanas tiptoed across floating vegetation and Grey-headed Swamphens called from the reeds. The water hosted an exciting mix of ducks including Cotton Pygmy Goose, Gadwall, Garganey, Northern Pintail, Eurasian Wigeon, Lesser Whistling Duck and the striking Red-crested Pochard, alongside Eurasian Coots and a stately Grey Heron. In the surrounding fields, students spotted lively species such as Paddyfield Pipit, Pied Bushchat, Indian Robin and Red-wattled Lapwing, while colourful birds like Green Bee-eater, Indian Roller and Purple Sunbird added flashes of colour to the landscape. The highlight for many was watching majestic raptors like Osprey and Black Kite soaring overhead, making the walk an exciting and memorable introduction to the fascinating world of birds.
